It is hard to see why Church are fighting relegation when they put in displays like this and last Wednesday as they were totally dominant in all departments and Bemerton were thankful to ex-Christchurch keeper Max Frampton that the score was only two nil.

The first 15 minutes were fairly even but with the first effort on goal Church took the lead after 16 minutes. A poor pass by a visitors defender saw Jack Lovell with one defender and the keeper in front of him and his low shot found the corner of the net. Church then began to dominate proceedings and nearly scored again on the half hour mark, from a set piece the ever dangerous Jon Grace was ruled offside when netting. Shortly after Nathan Saxby shot narrowly wide when put through by Lovell and the only threat from Bemerton came just before half time when a 60 yard run by their pacey number 11 was stopped by a Matt Swindlehurst challenge.

Church started the second period well and on 48 minutes Lovell was denied by a fine Frampton save but shortly after a poor clearance by the keeper resulted in Saxby putting the ball into an empty net from 30 yards. The remainder of the game was dominated by the home side as the back four were solid and the midfield pairing of the two Smiths controlled midfield and it was only fine keeping from Frampton that prevented the lead from increasing further as he denied Dan Saul and substitute Matt Vining.

It is more than likely that two wins out of the last four games will see Church safe but they face a demanding game on Monday at Bournemouth Poppies who will be seeking revenge for the heavy defeat they suffered at Hurn Bridge earlier in the season.

The return of former players Dan Taylor, Jon Grace and Marc Fairbrother together with the first match for new chairperson Flo Legg inspired Church to a much needed victory against a strong visiting team.

The game was fairly even for the first ten minutes but it was Andover who took the lead on 11 minutes when some fine wing play resulted in a cross and a neat finish from 15 yards. However it did not take Church long to draw level when a corner was only partially cleared and when the ball was returned into the area Dan Saul rose above everybody to net after 17 minutes. Church were then grateful to keeper Adam Tong with a brave double save on 32 minutes and then Church took the lead after 38 minutes when from another corner the returning Jon Grace netted from close range.

The second period started evenly but the Church back four were in fine form and with the midfield passing well and the forwards working so hard it came as no surprise when a third goal arrived. Young substitute Callum Cunniffe-Pilley showed great pace and skill to run onto a through ball and when he was fouled the penalty was neatly slotted home by skipper Mark Smith. There was more to follow as after a period of Andover pressure resulting in a number of corners Church obtained a corner of their own and it was that man Grace again who rose to net with a firm header. Matters got worse for the visitors shortly before the end of the game when one of their substitutes was red carded and then they conceded goal number five when following a fine run by Matt Vining he pulled the ball back to fellow substitute Marcus Cullen who rifled in a fine effort from 20 yards. Vining himself nearly netted in injury time shooting just wide when put through on goal.

Manager Adie Arnold must take great heart from the result and the massive effort put in by all 14 players and the result takes Church out of the relegation zone and similar performances for the rest of the season should see them retain their premier league status.

Despite a spirited performance Church came away empty handed against a physically stronger home side on a pitch that at best was bumpy and at worst was………….

The first 15 minutes were fairly even with Church’s new back four coping well and the first effort on goal was a fierce shot from Nathan Saxby but this was straight at the goalkeeper. It was the home side who then began to look more threatening and on 18 minutes only a fine last ditch challenge by Dan Saul prevented a clear effort on goal. Shortly after keeper Adam Tong saved well with his feet with the visitors were battling well and just when it looked as if it would be goalless at the break Horndean took the lead after 43 minutes. Church had a free kick on the half way line but this was easily cleared resulting in a break away to the other end and a shot from 12 yards ending up in the net.

The second period was again fairly even but the home side looked more dangerous in front of goal and they wrapped up the points with a penalty on 80 minutes after a foul by the outstanding Lovell (initially the referee awarded a free kick outside the area but after consulting his assistant gave a penalty) and then added to their total deep into injury time with a header from a corner. There was still time for a Saul header to be well saved but this was too little too late.

There now remains eight games with six being at home and two away against local opposition for Church to avoid relegation and whilst this will be difficult it is no means impossible.

Despite a spirited performance Church returned from Hamble pointless and now face a tough battle to avoid relegation.

The only point of note in a scrappy opening 15 minutes was a Marcus Cullen free kick that went over the bar and for the rest of the first period it was the home side who looked the more dangerous in attack but some fine defending kept them at bay until the half hour mark. Church failed to clear their lines at least three times and when a cross came in it was headed into the net from close range.

The second period started with Adam Tong making a fine save in a one on one situation but the keeper was given no chance when a snap cross shot from 25 yards found the back of the net on 54 minutes. The main point of the game came after 66 minutes when the score could have been 2-1 but became 3-0. Callum Cuniffe -Pilley made a mazy run leaving defenders in his wake and Matt Swindlehurst kept pace with him all the way and when he received the ball with only the keeper to beat he was denied by the keepers legs. The ball went straight up the other end and Tong fouled an attacker resulting in a penalty and a yellow card. True to Church’s luck the penalty was in the top corner scraping the bar on the way in. Church reduced arrears with 10 minutes remaining with substitute Bryce Banfield netting with a fierce drive from 18 yards but they were unable to score again despite having the better of play.

With both sides near the relegation zone this was expected to be a close encounter but this was not the case as the home side were outplayed and in addition were made to pay for their poor discipline.

The visitors started the better of the two sides and were especially dangerous on their right flank and it came as no surprise when they took the lead on 21 minutes when a defensive error resulted in a clear run on goal and a neat finish. Alresford had the better of further chances in the first period and at half time all Church had to show was four bookings which would prove costly later in the game.

The next goal would be vital and unfortunately for Church it went to the visitors when on 49 minutes a shot was parried by keeper Adam Tong and following up was an Alresford player to net easily. Church then had their best 10/15 minutes of the game without duly testing the goalkeeper but the game was effectively up for Church with 20 minutes remaining when two of their players were sent off in the space of two minutes for second yellow cards. Firstly it was Matt Swindlehurst who up to this point was one of the better Church players and then debutant Jordan Dent for an after the ball incident. Alresford were then content to play out time but they did a third after 84 minutes.

This was a big disappointment for manager Adie Arnold and his team and they now have a difficult job on their hands to avoid relegation.

Church’s recent run of undefeated games came to an abrupt end in a local derby packed with incident and excellently officiated.

Keeper Adam Tong came to the home sides rescue as early as the third minute saving well at the near post and he did well two minutes later from a well struck free kick. The visitors were looking the livelier of the two sides and it came as no surprise when they took the lead after 22 minutes when Church failed to clear a corner, when the ball was returned into the penalty area it was volleyed into the net. For the next few minutes Church had a good spell without really testing the Verwood keeper and at the other end Tong again had to be at best making a double save. The game was basically over between the 34rd and 36th minute when the visitors netted twice. Firstly a neat finish when clean through on goal and secondly a free header from a corner.

Church needed an early goal at the start of the second half to get back in the game but this was not forthcoming as chances were created at both ends, however they did reduce the arrears on 65 minutes with Bryce Banfield heading in a Cunliffe-Pilley cross for his first goal for the club, but they were unable to take heart from this and it was Verwood who wrapped the victory up after 74 minutes with another goal from a corner. The last minutes were notable for fine saves by both keepers keeping the score down.

Manager Adie Arnold now has the job of picking the players up for a very important game in the week at Fareham Town and it was a shame that this was the teams first game in three weeks which showed in their performance.
