Christchurch FC v Andover New Street FC – 16th March 2019

CHRISTCHURCH FC 3
ANDOVER NEW STREET FC 0

Sydenhams Football League (Wessex)

Saturday 16 March 2019

This was a “must win” game for Christchurch in their quest to maintain their status in the Wessex League Premier Division and, despite the swirling wind, did not disappoint.

Although the visitors started strongly, Christchurch matched them and during the first half-hour both teams had opportunities to take the lead, but the strong swirling wind was the main contributory factor in shots being wide of the goal.  Brad Cherrett was tripped in the penalty area but the referee saw nothing wrong and waved play on, but 5 minutes later Brad crossed the ball to ASH POPE, who beat 2 defenders and shot past the goalkeeper into the bottom corner of the net to give Christchurch the lead.  Lucas Murrain then received a through ball and lobbed over the goalkeeper but unfortunately over the bar as well, so that the half-time score remained at 1-0.

Into the second half and a promising move involving Nick Swann, Ash Pope and Alex Whitehouse saw Lucas Murrain’s shot saved by the visiting goalkeeper and then shot the rebound wide of the post.  Midway through the second half, a cross by Ash Pope found ALEX WHITEHOUSE unmarked who shot wide of the goalkeeper to increase Christchurch’s lead.  5 minutes later, Christchurch went further ahead when a free kick by ASH POPE found Lucas Murrain, but his shot was saved by the visiting ‘keeper and cleared upfield only for the ball to be returned to Ash who calmly slotted the ball past the goalkeeper into the net for 3-0.  Over the next few minutes Christchurch brought on all 3 substitutes, but play was held up momentarily when a pheasant wandered onto the pitch, hoping to help the Andover defence!  Further shots by Christchurch were dealt with by the visiting defence but the score remained 3-0 to give Christchurch 3 more valuable points.

Christchurch – Frampton, Cherrett, Cooper (Rogers 73). Wright, Walker, Robinson (Bishop 71), Swann, Haynes D, Pope (Butler 71), Murrain, Whitehouse.  Unused subs – Satterley J, King O
