Christchurch FC v Portland United – 6th April 2019

CHRISTCHURCH FC 1
PORTLAND UNITED 0

Sydenhams Football League (Wessex)

Saturday 6 April 2019

There was little of note in the first 10 minutes of this game, littered with free-kicks and offsides, but then Christchurch took the lead when a cross from the right beat 2 defenders and was headed into goal by BRAD CHERRETT.  Apart from this, too many passes were going astray from both sides with little constructive football being played, a sign that the end of the season was fast approaching!  On the half-hour, man of the match Max Frampton pulled off a fantastic save with his feet following interplay down the Portland right.  After this, the defences continued to deal with potential threats, to leave the score at 1-0 at half-time.

The second half started with yellow cards for players from both sides, then a shot from Portland was tipped round the post by Max Frampton, who then safely collected the ball from the resulting corner.  A shot by Harvey Wright from just outside the penalty area went just past the near post, then a foul on Brad Cherrett led to an altercation involving several players from both sides and 2 more yellow cards!  Over the next 10 minutes, both sides used all 3 of their substitutes, then towards the end of the half, a move involving Nick Swann, Harvey Wright and Alex Whitehouse led to the latter firing just wide of the far post.  The final act of the half saw a free-kick on the left by Brad Cherrett cleared initially by the visitors defence but the rebound went to Chris Bishop and on to Max Wilcock, whose shot narrowly missed the target.  So, the match finished 1-0 to give Christchurch 3 valuable points and, with results elsewhere, ensured mathematical safety in the premier division at last.  Well done to Ollie and the team!

Christchurch – Frampton, Wright, Cooper, Walker, Douglas, Cherrett, Swann, Haynes D (Whitehouse 74), Gale (Bishop 84), Wilcock, Kirkham (Butler 77).  Unused subs – King O, Satterley J
